The day before her wedding, my sister asked me to disappear for a while, so i sold the condo she…
Near the back, I spotted Ethan in a dark suit, speaking calmly with the banquet manager. On a side table nearby sat a stack of white envelopes labeled by table number.
My throat tightened.
Earlier that morning, after his message, I had met him briefly outside the resort. We had gone over everything again. Inside those envelopes were condensed records from the USB—organized, simplified, stripped down to what mattered. Gavin’s pattern. The complaints in Ohio and Michigan. The names Linda Farrow and Daniel Rhodes. Everything arranged so anyone could understand it at a glance.
Ethan had also reached out to people Gavin had harmed. Not all could come, but a few had arrived in person—quiet, controlled, waiting.
Linda and Daniel were already inside, seated among guests.
And so were two detectives Ethan had coordinated with, blending in as out-of-town relatives. No uniforms. Just watchful eyes.
The ballroom filled steadily. Laughter returned, glasses clinked, compliments about the ceremony floated through the air. I smiled when required, nodded when expected, while something underneath me held perfectly still—like the floor was waiting to split.
Then Evelyn and Gavin entered as newlyweds.
Applause rose. Gavin looked pleased, arm resting possessively at her back. When his eyes met mine, he gave a faint, confident smile.
He thought this was over.
Staff began placing envelopes at each seat. No one questioned it. It looked like part of the event.
Ethan shifted subtly toward a position where he could see both exits and the head table. One detective moved closer to the doors. The other settled near the groomsmen.
Dinner began.
Forks tapped. Conversation resumed. Wine poured.
Then it started.
A chair scraped back sharply.
A woman stood near the middle tables, her voice cutting through the room—shaking, furious.
She said the bride was marrying a con artist.
